Synopsis
Eight young Israelis find themselves at a life�s crossroads.
Their common ground is being out of place in their surroundings and they all long for a sense of wholeness and integrity which eludes them.
Even so they unconditionally delve into a final delusional quest in search of a satisfying solution to their loss.
MYMYM is a journey which concludes by intersecting their paths for the first and last time.
Each person and the path they take. Each path and the surprises at its bend.
With some of Israel�s less known scenery at the background and exercising free cinematic expressions, the characters� exploits run parallel to each other, crossing back and forth those reified borderlines that seem to persist within our minds � those between reality and imagination.
Director's statement
Some time ago, I became acquainted with different takes on that elusive spiritual aspect we assume to ourselves.
The ordered presentation of the ideas I encountered aroused me to express the indistinctness of spiritual experiences.
The need to make sense of my own excited state at the time was pressing and the received versions I learned of offered little relief.
Whatever such experiences I accumulated have left me as puzzled as before.
This drove me to formulate a more personal, unmediated attempt at coming to terms with the sensation of transient experiences.
Mymym was the active resolution of the urge to make this kind of sense.
One bright day, equipped with a SONY-PD150 camera and accompanied by friends, we begun shooting.
We used a skeletal script, coupling personal fragments together with impulsive ideas, as our departing point.
The priority was to enjoy the shooting rather then submitting to any normative dictate.
David Lynch�s work, digital effects and the look of make-do production proved encouraging in this respect.
What initially resembled pieces of a puzzle were composed together during editing.
We tried to reduce the elements that would have catered to a straight story line, as this was counter to the desired appeal.
We shared an implicit understanding that following any particular sub-story too closely should be avoided � as soon as a clear message or attitude seemed to stand out � we deliberately abandoned it.
The steering among alternating emotions and relocation of the narrative�s anchor and viewer�s attention tries to express a state of inner questioning.
More like flowing or wondering than the classic personal discovery narrative.
The idea was to create a space for spontaneous unfolding of events with minimal direction.
This film hopes foremost to portray young persons� state of inner questioning, not necessarily narrate their spiritual experiences.
The participants and crew are good friends of mine and are integral to my own search for answers.
